Shawn B. Welch, Partner
Mr. Welch has advised on, underwritten or invested over $75 billion dollars of capital during his 22 year career. These transactions were executed across a broad range of asset classes and industry sectors including consumer products, retail, basic industries, specialty finance, technology, franchising and healthcare. He founded his own advisory and principal investing firm, Midtown Capital Advisors, in 2006 after serving as a Partner with Roark Capital Group since 2002. From 1989 to 2002 he served in multiple Investment Banking roles with Banc of America Securities and its predecessor organizations; lastly managing the Southeastern Investment Banking Group. Mr. Welch has advised or served on the Board of Directors of 25 companies during his career. He is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology, with highest honors, and resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he has spent his entire career.
Mark A. Buffington, Partner
Mr. Buffington has an extensive background in early-stage investing, having founded three successful startup companies including Buckhead Investment Partners, LLC, a wealth management company and Registered Investment Advisor that currently manages over $200 million in assets. Other successful startup companies include Peachtree Financial Management and Phoenix Capital, both of which focused on investing and managing assets for high net worth individuals. This included passive investments in the public markets supplemented by active participation in lead-managed venture capital investments. He currently serves as a Director of Ingenious Med, Vendormate, Reach Call, Inc., and 2080 Media. Mr. Buffington graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology, has a MBA from Tulane University and started his career in commercial banking with Citibank.
H. Scott Pressly, Partner
Mr. Pressly has a diverse and complementary background as an investor, advisor and operating executive. He was a Partner with Roark Capital Group where he was directly responsible for sourcing and closing multiple franchise investments and served on the board of directors for a variety of franchisors, including Schlotzsky's Deli, Fastsigns, Money Mailer, Cinnabon and Carvel Ice Cream. Mr. Pressly also has significant direct operating experience previously holding leadership roles with U.S. Franchise Systems, a publicly-traded hotel franchisor, The Walt Disney Company and Dow Chemical USA. Mr. Pressly is active in the franchise community and is currently Chairman of the International Franchise Association's Supplier Forum Advisory Board, and a Trustee for the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation. Mr. Pressly received his MBA from Harvard Business School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, magna cum laude, from the University of Florida.
Tom Wells, Senior Associate
Mr. Wells has a background in investment banking and private equity. He has advised on or invested in transactions across a broad range of industries including healthcare, technology, manufacturing, consumer products, environmental services and transportation. Prior to joining BIP, he worked for Century Park Capital Partners, a Los Angeles based private equity group focused on the lower middle market. Prior to that, Mr. Wells was an analyst in the San Francisco office of Harris Williams & Co., a leading middle market investment bank. Mr. Wells received his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and earned a Bachelor of Science in Management from Boston College.
